The 5th graders at HSA- Dayton Elementary had a final field trip as elementary students with a visit to the Newport Aquarium in Newport, Kentucky. Students were able to view exhibits like the World Rivers, the Bizarre and Beautiful, Dangerous and Deadly, and Jellyfish Gallery, where they experienced diverse populations of aquatic species. They also saw exhibits like Frog Bog, with many different frog species from around the world, Canyon Falls, with the Asian River Otter and brightly colored chameleons, Penguin Palooza, with 6 different penguin species, Shark Central, with a petting area to touch certain species of sharks, Gator Alley, with the American White Alligators, and the Shark Tank, with Shark Rays as well as other species of sharks which can be viewed through underwater tunnels. Lastly, students finished the tour of the Newport Aquarium with a brave stroll on the new Shark Bridge, a rope netting across the giant shark tank!
After a pleasant lunch outside the aquarium, the 5th graders then boarded the Ride the Ducks Amphibious DUK Boat. During the tour, the students traveled by land and water to 3 states (KY, IN, and OH), and 2 cities (Cincinnati and Newport). Along with the tour guide and operator, students were given many facts and explanations about the area included landmarks like Great American Ballpark, the World Peace Bell, Historic Riverside Drive, Carew Building, and the Great American Bank Building. Students were also given a special “quacker” to quack like a duck while on the tour.
